A New Chapter in Human Health: How to Live Here and Now

If you’re happy with the way healthcare works and what it stands for, if you believe the so called “system” supports you in living the best possible life you can — feel free to stop reading this and please do send us a note explaining how — we’re curious and always open to learning new things. However, if you share the belief that healthcare is broken and that personal health should actually mean the active pursuit and optimization of a life that’s happier, healthier and longer, not just waiting for it to break, then by all means do continue reading.

We believe that great health should be much more than just fixing broken people. In this context we, the LL&F Club, don’t subscribe to the cliche “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it”. Fixing breakage is just one aspect of living a good life, one that’s unfortunately too many times not only avoidable, but also too-little-too-late.

So, what should we actually DO?

Glad you asked. We’ve been asking ourselves the very same question and came up with a few ideas we’re happy to share.

But first, let’s spend a minute or two understanding what health means for most people at the beginning of the 21st century.

A lot has changed over the past century — on the one hand life expectancy has almost doubled but on the other hand, chronic disease have exploded and are now the leading cause of death in the U.S. and beyond. Paradoxically, we live longer BUT forced to endure pain, agony and serious sickness along the (longer) way. In other words, for most of us, sadly, healthcare became the management of prolonged periods of sickness. This shouldn’t be the case.

What health should actually mean is the optimization of our day-to-day wellbeing. An optimized self would include a healthy and energetic body, a sharp and peaceful mind and a generous dose of stamina and joy. Luckily, the side-effects of such day-to-day optimization would be the compression of episodic sickness and the prevention of future chronic conditions, and thus, the prolonging of a life that’s brighter and happier.

Think about it — we are ‘given’ a gift of a long life but somewhere along the way we get sidetracked and make short term decisions that damage it. Our mission at the LL&F Club, is to help everyone get back on track and figure out the magic formula that optimizes for both short term health/wellbeing, as well as the long term compression of morbidly. In the simplest of terms — prolonging a good life that’s full of joy.

We choose life, we choose people

We choose to value life. That one-time gift that each of us receives at birth. We choose to value people and what makes us human beings: Our bodies, our minds and our souls. This inevitably leads us to embrace a goal of finding Healthy Hacks⁺, Motivating Tricks*, and Science Maps^ that create limitless desirable possibilities on the road to discovering good health, sustainable wellness and pure happiness.

So, what are we REALLY here for?

We’re here to tirelessly pursue the mantra: “There’s got to be a better way!” We’re here to promote a new innovative way of thinking that is more inquisitive/critical, and much more quantitative and hands-on. We believe this will lead us to find solutions that are much more effective. Health needs to be continuously woven into the texture of our lives, here and now, and anytime anywhere.

We’re here to remove the noise and uncover the pure signal. Basically, there’s too much confusing and contradictory information floating around us about health, where too much of it is unsubstantiated marketing looking to make a quick profit. So we decided to choose truth as our North Star and we are devoted to constantly refine the definition of quality in the context of personal health.

We’re here to find and share with everyone the best tools and frameworks to achieve a happier, healthier and longer life that will enable people everywhere to flourish and feel good — every single day.

We are committing ourselves to taking incremental steps and to always validate our results using scientific means so we will achieve a significant, measurable impact.

So, how are we going to do it?

LL&F stands for Live Long and Flourish. People around us, near and far, have always been our best inspiration. That’s why we are gathering folks with great minds and big hearts to join the LL&F Club community in its journey, and help us lead it to success. We have already brought onboard scientists and doctors, techies and philosophers, wellbeing and behavioral experts, inventors, investors, teachers and more, all share our goals and values and are here to help.

We’re putting all this collective brain & heart power together to create a roadmap to a better, healthier and more joyful life. In our toolbox we have Healthy Hacks⁺, Motivating Tricks* and Science Maps^ — extra extra read all about them here.

We’re excited about working together towards a shared goal — a disruptive paradigm shift, a breakthrough change in the way we evaluate, practice, and educate the art and science of health and wellbeing. We will talk and listen and ask a million questions since the best answers are out there but not enough was done to uncover them.

Last, but (definitely) not least!

We value “Primum non Nocere”: Firstdo no harm. In a world of rapid discovery and innovation, the Hippocratic oath is as relevant and as timely as ever. For us, everything starts with this important vow that doctors and caregivers have been taking for generations. We have taken the vow too and will make sure that what we do and say causes no harm to any human being. We’re here to do good and to have fun in the process!

Great, now what?

We’d love to get you and other great people involved, aligned and excited. After all, we’re together in this beautiful thing called life. Our greatest accomplishments are achieved together, as a community, as we’re inspired and empowered by one another. It’s simply human.

We’d love to see as many smart, warm-hearted folks join us in writing our Credo and ultimately live by it too. We believe that what we create together will benefit everyone everywhere. We also believe that being united around the same values is essential to accomplishing a shared goal that is luckily very easy to live by and identify with: Living Long and Flourishing.

So we’re delighted to invite you to join us in writing a new chapter in human health. You can do so by engaging with us in a conversations here, or by applying to join the LL&F Club and one of our upcoming Club meetings — the next one is on December 8th.

This upcoming event would take place at Stanford University and will gather, once again, a remarkable group of people to have fun together, share/discuss Healthy Hacks⁺, Motivating Tricks* and Science Maps^, and help one another achieve healthier, happier and longer lives.

Let us know if you are interested to join or would like to nominate others who can benefit from and contribute to our journey to a new chapter in human health.

We’re here to help you (and ourselves as well) discover the path to a better life for all. So feel free to come on board, buckle up, and take off with us to explore and discover the new highs of life itself.

It’s time!

It’s time, to live a happy life

It’s time, to live a healthy life

It’s time to Live Long and Flourish!

That’s why we decided to launch the LL&F Club, because excited about Living Long and Flourishing. We are here to find the best way to get there, and share with you and everyone everywhere valuable Healthy Hacks⁺, Motivating Tricks* and Science Maps^ that will help everyone live a long life, and flourish along the way.

It’s so easy for everyone to resonate with the “Live” and “Long” parts of our mission, but let’s spend a minute on the “Flourish” part.

Here’s the dictionary definition for the word “flourish” to start with:

flour·ish

/ˈfləriSH/

verb

(of a person, animal, or other living organism) grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.

It’s a bag full of goodies.

grow” and “develop” — yes! It’s been shown again and again that constant growth and development are the best ways to live a meaningful and full life constantly moving forward, learning, growing, and evolving. The same way we evolve and develop in our physical form, we’re much better-off doing so in our mental and spiritual forms too. It is simply essential to being whole and reaching our full potential.

Back to the definition: “healthy” and “vigorous” — now we’re touching the core of life — our health and vitality. These are instrumental to our pursuit of a happy life that’s full of energy and hope. Without them, we’re like a machine without an engine at worst, and at best, a machine with an engine, but with the wrong fuel!

And what about the “favorable environment” in the definition? This is where the rubber meets the road and the LL&F Club starts playing an important role in our lives. Our main task is to help you and eventually everyone everywhere create the right environment that will underlie the happiest, healthiest and longest life possible, and provide the right tools to enable it for you.

LL&F is a lofty goal, indeed. But we’re all about measurable, incremental steps that lead to transformative long lasting results, and frankly, we’re very (very) tired of hearing that healthcare is about fixing broken people. It’s not. It’s all about helping people constantly flourish and keeping you and us and others healthy and happy as long as humanly possible. It’s about living to our full potential every day, every hour and every minute. And to do so, we’re planning to help pave the road with actionable Health Hacks⁺, useful Motivating Tricks*, and valuable scientific roadmaps to getting there and sustaining the good life we’re all aspiring to live.

The good news is that we’re not alone! To tackle this lofty goal, and have fun in the process, we’re gathering brilliant minds with big hearts from all walks of life — scientists, designers, healthcare professionals, wellness enthusiasts, technologists, teachers, philosophers, and others.

Our inaugural meeting brought together a bunch of these folks to discuss and share with one another their passion for LL&F and their knowledge on how to get there. It was exciting, fun and enriching, and felt like a historic moment. The time for LL&F has arrived!

Why Now? (and even more specifically, simply why?)

There are endless mountains and rivers of information out there about what you should do in order to improve your health and well-being. And not only that most of it is confusing, not grounded in rigorous research, and too many times contradictory, but also, too much of it is about what you shouldn’t do.

On the one hand, all these streams of information help grow an awareness for living healthfully, but on the other hand all this mishmash of knowledge yields almost nothing. We’re still engulfed by truly scary rates of obesity, Alzheimer’s, dementia, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, heart conditions, and what have you. And even folks who are considered “healthy”, for the most part aren’t as happy as they’d like to be. So many things are wrong with this picture so we’ve decided to work together to simplify things, and boil them down to the essence of why this is the case and how to fix it. We believe that there’s a flaw in how the right information is communicated and found, and an even bigger one in what folks do (or more often don’t do) with all this information. We also see a lack of support in converting this information to action and measuring what really works and what doesn’t. We’re here to help fix that.

One more thing. We also know there is a great deal of valuable information that isn’t easily findable, or not yet readily accessible to most people, including you. We’re on our way to changing that and to making this knowledge readily available, and even more importantly, easily digestible to you and others.

How We’ll Do It

We’re excited to work together with you and other brilliant, big-hearted members of the LL&F community to weave for you and for everyone everywhere a special map/blueprint, so you’ll be able to put the wheels of change in motion, and use them to find your road to a healthy, happy life.

We’ll provide our members and then the rest of the world with valuable tools for change:

  • Healthy Hacks⁺

  • Motivating Tricks*

  • Science Maps^

All backed by real, thoughtful, validated science!

Healthy Hacks⁺

Are the actions. The very things you can do to improve every aspect of you life, from nutrition to sleep to physical activity to mind & brain to breathing to awareness to positive disposition to prudent risk-management (and more!)

Our members will research, propose and validate Health Hacks⁺. Once a hack is approved by club members, it will be communicated to the world — and we’ll do it in a positive way! We plan to only tell you what you should do, not what you shouldn’t. We’ll do that by explaining the benefits of using Health Hacks⁺ rather than scaring you with all the bad things that will happen if you don’t.

If you’re a super doer, that’s probably all you’ll need. For the rest of us humans, we’ll also need:

Motivating Tricks*

These touch on what we identify as one of the main downfalls of the current healthcare system and the wellbeing-advice-giving industry: They only focus on what to do, while neglecting the why and the how. Behavioral and cognitive changes aren’t easy, to say the least, and for many of us they can become a nightmare (figuratively and sometimes even literally!). So a Health Hack⁺ without a Motivating Trick* is like having a car but no paved roads; you can take the dirt road, and you may get to where you’re heading, but it’s gonna be one hellova bumpy ride at best. But you’re likely to get a flat tire and get stuck or worse so, you might even break an axle and never get anywhere.

This is why we’ll attach to every Health Hack⁺ a habit-changing, behavior-shifting, motivation-enhancing Motivating Trick* (or two) to help you start engaging with the hacks and continue engaging until you start ripping the fruit of health and happiness. We will find and share the best Motivating Tricks* used by folks who found a way to continuous engagement and sustainable habits. Some may stop here and feel this is good enough. But if you’re more curious than that, or just like us, you need to fully understand the underlying mechanisms of things in order to be truly invested, we’ve got your back:

Science Maps^

Exactly as it sounds, Science Maps^ are educated, well-proven blueprints of why and how these Hacks⁺ and Tricks* work together, how they fit into our lives, and how to measure their impact on our health, our happiness, and our longevity. In the LL&F world, Science Maps^ help you and us understand, engage, measure, learn, and create a virtuous improvement cycles. They help integrate Healthy Hacks⁺ and Motivating Tricks* into our lives in an impactful and sustainable way.

Yes! You can too!

We started by saying that it’s all about you — your drive, your aspirations, and your desire for a happier, healthier and longer life. You are the real agent of change. You are the one! We’re here to help you, and you can be here to help us and many others who want the same too. Sometimes, and particularly when it comes to health and happiness, the best way to help yourself is by helping others — you can join us to do just that!

The only thing we ask is, don’t keep it to yourself. Let’s open the circle, let’s collaborate, and let’s help the information flow around to benefit all of us. Anyone can simply read what we share and benefit from what we learn (you’re very welcome!), or you can join the LL&F Club, try these Health Hacks⁺ and Motivating Tricks* yourself and share with the community what you learn so we can all grow and become happier and healthier as a result.

This is a joint effort, a journey with a shared goal. To Live Long & Flourish. Together!

Stay tuned! More flourishing delights are coming your way soon!

Live Long & Flourish

On a beautiful Indian summer evening in Sausalito, we brought together a special group of healthies & techies for the inaugural event of the LL&F Club.

If you wondered, LL&F stands for Live Long and Flourish. The Club is an invite-only community of curious folks on a mission to discover, research, and validate the most effective Health Hacks⁺ that will help us all flourish by living happier, healthier and longer lives.

Following the traditions of the Home-brew Computer Club and the Leather Apron Club, members of the LL&F Club get together regularly, in person and online, to learn and teach each other Health Hacks⁺, and motivate one another to persist with the best ones. Together, we’re creating a special database of Health Hacks⁺ — the ones we choose to try and validate, the ones that actually work, and for whom and when they work best.

We were very grateful to Dr. Dean Ornish for hosting us graciously at his Preventive Medicine Research Institute (PMRI) in Sausalito, where he told us about his inspiring work and research studies. These included his historic study successfully reversing heart conditions without medications or surgery, as well as his current study working to reverse Alzheimer’s disease with similar means.

It was a fun and fascinating evening geeking out Healthspan with a truly remarkable group of thinkers and doers (now LL&F Club members). The great conversation was humming with accomplished technologists and engineers like Harry Saal and Noam Ziv as well as distinguished doctors like Rajiv Doshi. We also heard some great insights from seasoned entrepreneurs like Andrew Lacy and Sean Mehra and from renowned academics and inventors like Utkan Demirci. The great contributions of big-hearted health & wellness enthusiasts like Isaac Weaver and fascinating philosophers like Damon Horowitz complemented the ones of smart investors like Jim O’Neill, Sebastian Caliri and Nicole Stanners and sharp mathematicians and AI folks like Daniel Ford.

The room was buzzing with this beautiful collection of minds and hearts. It truly was a special moment (should I dare say, historic) where technology and health came together to unveil what makes life happier, healthier and longer. We learned about new and exciting Health Hacks⁺ such as fatty-acids that don’t oxidize, thereby protecting cellular functions and energy production. We asked ourselves can this be the ultimate antioxidant (when for now it’s been showing promise by broadly treating multiple intractable diseases in which such oxidation has been implicated) but Harry corrected us and said that these are actually “blocksidants” that actually block oxidation!

Retrotope is working to establish stabilized lipids as Blocksidants

We also heard about a miniature CPAP Health Hack⁺ device that Rajiv invented that can help prevent snoring and treat sleep apnea as well. This Health Hack⁺ can be beneficial for both better sleep, as well as a better relationship with your spouse, by itself an important source of greater Healthspan :) We debated the merits and shortcomings of the Keto diet (and Sebastian told us about the “delights” of trying to carry bags of avocados/macadamia nuts to ensure compliance ;) and noodled on intermittent fasting and its advantages (and torments) for those of us who tried it. And as a Health Hack⁺ “dessert” we enjoyed a vivid demo of the Prenuvo full body MRI that can help with early detection of a multitude of risk factors and actual conditions that might hinder our Healthspan if we’re not attentive enough.

The inaugural event of the LL&F Club was not just about food for thought. We also prepared ourselves a bunch of delicious healthy chows at the state-of-the-art, fabulously equipped kitchen that’s normally used to prepare the special Ornish Diet meals for the participants in Dean’s studies.

We stuffed red, yellow and orange peppers with Quinoa and Amaranth, the ancient grain native to Peru and Bolivia that was popularized by the Aztecs in Mexico as a super-food for both men and gods. Amaranth is known for its health benefits and as such is now in the running to become an approved nutritional LL&F Health Hack⁺ too!). We also made a yummy vegan lasagna using Dean Ornishe’s special recipe with a healthy homemade marinara sauce we invented (made with Italian tomatoes from San Marzano).

We then enjoyed Greek-style stuffed grape leaves (also used in indigenous medicine to stop bleeding, as well as to reduce inflammation and lower pain levels — which would be fascinating to validate of just categorize as “folklore”), and chewed on crispy (baked) umami seaweed chips from Japan. The Israeli beetroot hummus, and the Moroccan tofu, as well as light date/coconut-based mini treats concluded a fabulously healthy/yummy tasting meal.

Drinks were carefully curated as well, with GT’s Living-in-Gratitude Kombucha (good for mind, palate, and soul), homemade ginger/beetroot/lemon juice, and of course, turmeric and green teas. And yes, we did serve some fine wines too (as we’re still studying the topic and debating whether to vote favorably for moderate drinking of alcohol as a validated LL&F Health Hack⁺.) If you’d like to join the conversation and learn what other Club members think and add your opinion too — feel free to apply here.

After everyone enjoyed delicious and healthy foods and drinks we moved to the very-zen PMRI yoga-room to discuss together how to make the LL&F Club successful and how to better structure the Health Hacks Database, which will be open to all LL&F Club members for both reading and editing.

Ben Mathes who architected the Health Hacks Database introduced us to its ins-and-outs and to the main categories we chose to outline a 360 degrees healthspan:

Our goal is to curate the right Health Hack⁺ combinations from across these categories to compose the interventions and habits needed to address the underlying Hallmarks of Aging. Our rich discussion about these categories led to a few ideas we’re working to implement in the next version of the Health Hacks Database, one of which was to add Motivational Hacks⁺ that can help people adhere to Health Hacks⁺ once they adopted them. Another good idea was to add the ‘why’, which would be a good reason for people try and persist with a particular Health Hack⁺ and on the desired road to habit formation.

At the end of the evening, everyone was happy, thankful, and intrigued. Folks told me they felt bad for those who we unfortunately couldn’t accommodated for this first gathering since we were oversubscribed for the size of the venue. My sincere apology to everyone who couldn’t get in this time, but we now have new great opportunities that opened up after the success of the first event. So if you feel you can benefit from, and contribute to the LL&F Club going forward and/or if you’d like to join our future events, and/or if you know someone else who would — please let us know. More great events and vibrant online conversations are coming soon! And speaking of which, if you’d like to get involved in either producing/co-hosting/sponsoring future events, or facilitating the ongoing online conversation or making the Health Hacks Database as vibrant and valuable as it can be — please let us know. We’d love to have more mission driven folks as members of our LL&F Club, especially folks who are excited to uncover and share with the world Health Hacks⁺ that actually work, so everyone everywhere can live healthier happier longer lives!
